  1. Mikael Haglund Says:

    Was going to send this a as mail (so 20th century), by Matt wanted it as comments, so here goes…

    I hope you view these comments as potentially helpful hints from a fan and frequent podcast listener. There are of course books (e.g. http://tinyurl.com/45jfp4) and other semi-professional input on the subject, but I am at least an seasoned podcast LISTENER

    I’ve listened to heaps of podcasts and here’s an overall structure I would suggest:

    * header
    -* teaser/interest getter (highly optional)
    - -* A very short quote from the show or possibly skit setting the stage or wetting the appetite. Sometimes just an interesting question. Used by e.g. Dan Klass (the Bitterest Pill), George Hrab (the Geologic podcast), Brian Ibbott (Coverville)
    -* Real intro/Show name/theme song
    - - * any disclaimers here are really short, such as “a discussion about interesting technical stuff. reflects the views/opinions of your hosts X, Y and Z, and their guests, and not necessarily that of any organization such as IBM”
    - - * If there are sections it can be a good idea to give a short declaration of them here, to let people fast forward. If you use an indexable format such as AAC, one can even jump from section to section.

    * trailer
    -* instructions on how to contribute
    -* contact information
    - -* Make sure you tell people how they can reach you/the web site. If possible put e-mail and web info in the mp3 file’s description tags
    -* detailed disclaimer
    - -* This is were you can repeat the disclaimer in full legalese if you feel you need to.
    -* It could be useful to state that there is no transcript available. For some shows (such as Matts today in history) there are transcripts available. Others have a humorous way of saying that there is none, listen to the trailer info on http://www.burghherfers.com/podcast.html , “For a written transcript…”. Oh, and don’t miss the header info “leathery, full bodied, with a short finish”….
    -* Copyright/creative commons licensing, attribution of music etc

    Be careful matching volume levels in header, trailer and main part of the show. It is annoying to not hear clearly because volume is too low, and really annoying to go deaf. If you use compression, use the same/similar level of compression on all sections.

    Too many disclaimers in the header has the same effect on me as a speaker starting his presentation with “Well, I’m not really a presenter, and I am not the expert on this subject”

  2. Matt Says:

    Wow this is great! Although, saying that this is great is really just my own opinion and does not reflect the position of any corporation or association with which I’m affiliated.

    I’ve been trying to get my co-hosts to warm up to the idea of structuring the show a bit more. I think Michael Rowe likes the idea. The other Michael, we have to work on a bit more. I think he’ll be fine with it if the work is already done. Perhaps I should just go ahead and write it.

    Thanks so much for the outline. I definitely want to use it.
