Michael and Michael welcome special guest Kirk Nelson. Before they begin celebrating the 4th of July, they guys talk about the Kindle. Both Kirk and Michael R. recently picked up Kindles and tell you all about the pluses and minuses from Amazon’s e-book reader. Michael M. decides to bring up other on-line book readers as a point of comparison. The 4th of July celebrations begin with a discussion of beer dispensing robots and a shout out to Robin Carey from Social Media Today.

I wonder why we need the Kindle at all. I’d love to be able to buy and read the Amazon format on my iPhone.
Here’s more about this on my blog: http://www.joeranft.com/2008/07/1-app-id-like-to-see-in-apple-iphone.html

HI Joe,
Thanks for the comments and I really enjoyed your blog post. I was following the guys on Mac Break about the iPhone book reade, and agree, that a iPhone eBook reader would be a great thing. However, I find that the non-backlit aspect of the Kindle is great for my eyes. I travel a lot and usually watch video podcasts on my iPhone aboard planes. The back light really does tier out my eyes. So far I don’t experience this with the Kindle. I am sure that I will comment more as I use the Kindle more. Keep on listening and throw a few tags our way, would love to see your perspective on things.

Now that the iPhone apps are out, you might be interested in Stanza which is an e-book reader… although I take your point about backlight, and I guess the Kindle’s battery life is likely to be better than the iPhone too.
